CULT-Committee invites Experts PDF Print E-mail

On 27 March the CULT-Committee of the European Parliament invited experts and stakeholders to a public hearing on the future EU programme for education and youth. In their presentations, the four experts agreed in one main point: They called for a sectoral approach with budget lines for each sector. A large attendance of stakeholders from the field of education and youth showed the huge interest in the experts’ comments and the replies of the MEP.

Validation of Non-Formal Learning – Results of the Public Consultation PDF Print E-mail

One year ago the European office responded to a public consultation on the promotion and validation of non-formal and informal learning. The European Commission has now published the results of the consultation: The European Commission received 469 responses to the online questionnaire, 24 organisations answered with a position paper, among them the European office in cooperation with several catholic organisations.  In the EU2020 strategy and its flagship initiatives Youth on the Move and Agenda for new skills and jobs the European Commission announced a proposal for a Council Recommendation on the validation of non-formal and informal learning – the public consultations was launched to prepare this proposal.

EU Youth Conference recommends lowering the voting age PDF Print E-mail

The Danish Council Presidency had invited youth delegates and Directors General of the EU Member States to a Youth Conference which took place from 19-21 March in Copenhagen. The EU Youth Conference is an element of the Structured Dialogue between the EU and young people and focussed on “Youth Participation in Democratic Life in Europe”. In their joint recommendations, the youth delegates and Directors General recommended lowering the voting age to 16 and a strong new programme for education and youth.

Both the European Commission and the Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council focused on youth unemployment in Europe: Latest statistics show that an average of more than 20% of 15-24 year olds in the EU are unemployed – that are more than 5 million young people. In some countries, such as Spain, youth unemployment is edging close to 50%. The time has come to act on European level.
